REMEMBRANCE
SELECTED WORKS OF
KENE SPERRY
‘The experience of memory, having come directly from the earth and sky, has been fundamentally connected to nature in our thinking for thousands of years. Nature often triggers the memory and sets us down a path to childhood. Remembrances like that can “strike” but, more often, they make their presence vaguely known at first. A sound or a scent you can’t place, a familiar taste touching the palate. Mnemosyne’s footsteps tapping gently on the stoop, just outside the door. This definition of remembrance offers an understanding of Sperry’s photography. His pieces strive to trigger that feeling, the sleepy half-awareness of a recognition, through nature. Considering the ancient familial ties between nature and memory, what better subject could there be?’
“This work is an invitation to surrender, to let go of the walls that separate us from one another, from the natural world and from ourselves.”
— James Farrell, Writer
“Each of his subjects have deliberate anonymity. The subject isn’t the skier, the mountain, the bison or a recognizable landscape, but the emotional connection the viewer feels as an observer, whether that be a sense of freedom, of longing, of anger or of love. the subject is you, looking inward.”
— Mira Brody, Writer
“two relentless decades of light and dark culminate in this volume which, frankly, is as much love song as it is portfolio.”
— Ryan Day Thompson, Curator
About
kene
“Artist Kene Sperry captures the light and dark of being human with the belief that when we face those contrasts, it builds the power to connect us. His intention in life and work is to be present, to guide with purpose and perspective, and to help others access their own divine light through his photographs. By untethering our beliefs and judgments, the viewer can lead a path to freedom and ultimately love more fully. As we move into a new decade, qualities of openness and patience are important now more than ever.”
